Being self-reliant can vary from person to person however it can be defined as someone that trusts their own abilities and resourcefulness. Self-reliance is also the ability to provide and defend yourself without the need for help from another person.
When you depend on others there is a strong probability that you will be left disappointed as people have their own lives and responsibilities that are a priority. So, increasing the ability to depend on yourself, your own thoughts and instincts, can reduce stress and promote more happiness.
Self-reliance does not mean you are not able to build a support network or that you must spend your time alone. It means it allows you to enjoy your relationships with your friends and family without relying on them to guide you through your life.
Here are some tips to help you become more self-reliant.
- Independent Thinking
Thinking independently is having the ability to reflect on your own knowledge and experiences and trust your instincts when forming and expressing your opinion instead of being steered by someone else’s’.
When thinking independently it is important that you have a strong sense of self and an understanding of your values. This paired with research or gathered information will allow you to form your own opinion and have confidence when needing to voice it.
- Be Yourself
We can often be deterred from truly being ourselves when we ask other people for their advice or opinion on our life experience. Reflecting inwards and sitting with our own thoughts and feelings can help to figure out exactly what we want.
Once you know what you want and who you are, you will gain a confidence in your ability to simply rely on yourself.
- Achieve Your Goals
Set some manageable goals within your current set of abilities to build your confidence and self-reliance. Once you have been able to achieve these goals start slowly setting some goals that take more independence but are not outside of your capabilities. The more you do this the more you will achieve and eventually you will look back on the goals you started with and see how far you’ve come.
It is important to be self-reliant, because it means trusting your thoughts and actions without needing validation from others. When you have strong convictions, your support network will be there to support you and offer a shoulder to lean on when you need it.
